Lipsoi - Dodecanese
Lipsoi
Lipsi is a great place to "get away from it all:" The 16-square-kilometer island, with its olive groves and fig trees, lovely beaches and pretty blue-and-white chapels and churches, is absolutely charming in its simplicity. The main harbor has tourist amenities, but the island has no other real villages. You can get everywhere on foot, although there's motorbike rental and a minibus. Excursion boats in the harbor take you to beaches you can't reach on foot, including those on the islets of Pilavi and Makri, the latter known for the natural arches in its cliff sides.
Forty people live on the little island of Arki; there are three tavernas here that rent rooms. Nearby Marathi has only two tavernas with rooms to let, and a gorgeous little beach which, during tourist season, is the destination of numerous daytrippers from Patmos and Lipsi.
Not reliant solely on fishing and tourism, Lipsi's economy also draws on, for example, a carpet factory where young women work to amass money for their dowries, and the local wine; there's a wine festival every August.
In Lipsi Town, however, sightseers have to content themselves with the small Ethnographic Museum and the Church of St. John the Theologian, funded by Lipsian emigrants to the United States, on the main square. Nearby is the Monument to Emmanolis Xanthos. He was a Lipsian who fought for Greek freedom in 1821.
In the off season, this town church also houses Lipsi's miraculous icon, which in summer is kept in 17th-century Panagia to Haru, about 20 minutes from town. This icon incorporates dried lily bulbs which blossom every year in August, an event which is commemorated by a church festival.
This Panagia is on the road to the island's main beach "strip," extending from Hohlakoura to Xirokambos on the eastern side, and from Katsadia to Papantria on the west. Heading west and north from Lipsi's harbor, you'll pass the beaches of Lendou and Kambos. In less than an hour you will arrive at Plans Gialos, encircling a shallow blue bay where white geese lazily swim as if it were a millpond. From this point you can continue along the footpath through the trees to Moshato, another popular "swimming hole."

The island lying two miles S of Arki. It supports a small population in the village of Lipso on the S side of the island. There is a harbour here in a dogleg bay, and there ar a number of small bays under the SW tip of the island.
Lipsoi, is an island in the Northern Dodecanese, south of Samos, north of Leros, east of Patmos, with just about 700 residents. It is a quite island where people still live a traditional lifestyle and farmers still ride on their donkeys, mules or horses to the fields. Much of the land on Lipsi was owned by the Monastery of St John the Baptist, on Patmos. Today, you can see small , white, blue domed churches dotted all over the island's rolling hills, which gently slope down to meet the sparkling sea. Lipsi's coastline consists of a number of small bays, sheltered coves & beaches with shallow crystal clear waters. Relax away your day at the beach or at sea, to one of the other nearby islands and then enjoy the evening at a taverna in the village harbour. |
